Blue light romance at this stunning Surrey venue
Adam Chandler is used to organising events that are deeply personal, and convey something very specific to those involved. In over a decade of helping people create events to remember, and that say exactly what the hosts are thinking, Adam has seen some really unusual ideas, and created the music to match them. When he met Alex and Jim, who were set to celebrate their marriage at Surrey's De Vere Horsely Estate, he quickly became as excited as they were about their concept.
As Jim explains;
“I'm a massive fan of The Bill - I watched it from 1990, when I was eight years old, right through until the final episode, in 2010. I've spent far too much money on memorabilia and DVDs, and, despite owning a large collection of episodes on DVD, I regularly find myself losing hours on a marathon session on YouTube. I kind of converted Alex to it when we met at uni in 2001, but she's always been more of a romantic-sitcom kind of girl. I first proposed to her when we graduated, and she told me that I was to ask her again when I'd worked out a wedding that realistically blended The Bill with humour and sensuality. We remained friends through relaxed jobhunting, panicked unemployment, poverty-wracked internships, and the frantic treadmill of full-time work, but we were both too busy, and too poor, to think about weddings. Three years ago, I got a promotion – and remembered that challenge from Alex....”
When We Light It Up arrived at Horsley, they were greeted by sleek, gleaming classic cars, and police vehicles. Dubious looking men in suits stalked the grounds, while women in power suits mingled in tight groups. Playing a medley of crime drama theme tunes (yes, including Jim's favourite!), West End gangster showtunes, and light, gentle love songs from across the years, what other colour mix could We Light It Up choose for their drum kit than blue?
The setting was certainly romantic, with soaring ceilings, landscaped grounds, and that timeless English elegance that seemed to have been made for swooning. Alex had wanted humour in her eclectic wedding ceremony, and We Light It Up had just the right song on the playlist as a trio of clowns – all in police uniform – took centre stage, with a slapstick routine that was spot on for the occasion.
