Musical Orphans at Trinity House with Kiera and Cal

A traditional Jewish wedding is an event that involves the whole community, so the music has to be spot on, bringing in both the history and heritage of Judaism, and the instantly recognisable, culturally important motifs for a proper Jewish wedding, whilst making a statement that the couple are Jews of their era, taking an ancient religion forward into a modern world in which it, and they, can succeed and flourish.

That was the challenge set for Musical Orphans, as they led the celebrations at Kiera and Cal's kosher wedding in the heart of London.

A modern couple in every sense, Kiera, a finance manager for a branding agency, and husband Cal, an architect, are also deeply spiritual, and very much in touch with their history, heritage, and culture. With traditional Jewish instrumentals marking the important moments in the ceremony itself, Musical Orphans would lead both Jewish and non-Jewish guests in an evening of relaxed dancing, playing a selection of songs the couple had chosen between them, including some contemporary Israeli pop songs.

With any wedding, the music should aim to capture the essence of the couple, whatever style or songs are being played. The music we resonate with tells the world who and what we are, and sets the stage for our interactions with others. In celebrations with a deeply religious element, this is even more important, as the celebration isn't just about the couple, but the weight and meaning of all their history and heritage, too. With Kiera and Cal's wedding, Musical Orphans pulled off this challenging task in stunning style – the highlight of the evening, for the musicians, was when Cal's 97 year old great-grandfather took to the dance floor, performing an innovative routine in which the cane he relied on seemed as much part of the dance as it was a mobility aid.
